Engineering
Reverse engineering captures the geometry of existing physical objects. Then the scanned data becomes the foundation for designing something new. The new design can be a duplicate of the original or a new adaptation. The scanner generated point cloud can be manipulated in 3D surfacing software and then sent to a rapid prototyping machine to be built, using typical file formats such as STL, IGES, or NURBS.
