High definition 3D laser scan surveys can now provide the survey professional an additional powerful service to complement traditional survey mapping techniques.
The 3D scanner automates the data collection process without having to access or touch the facility, site, or artifact. Comprehensive data can be collected quickly, accurately, with high intensity and safety.

D. Wellman Surveying is proud to provide 3D scanning services to our industry: the 3D scanner brings unparalleled efficiency to complex engineering and data capture operations. For example, the plant installation at left requires a permanent design modification. The historical statue at left is to be accurately mapped and replicated. Instead of traditional, time-intensive mapping techniques, we three-dimensionally scan the entire portion of the facility or artifact. |
| Next, a 3D “point cloud” is generated from the scanned data. To help distinguish individual features, the point cloud is “shrink wrapped” and colorized as shown here. | ... to this ... ![]() ![]() |

Finally a 3D model or surface is prepared from the “shrink-wrapped” point cloud which is now ready for your preferred CAD/CAM program format. Dimensional data can be developed and typical 2D engineering drawings or profiles and contours can be produced as needed. |
| The breakthrough is the 3D model point surface information
which can be manipulated by the design engineer to access, to view from any angle, to measure precisely and to modify any part of it. As you can see, this new versatility and accuracy will prevent costly errors. Replications of artifacts and site topography is possible. Replicas of original art and historical artifacts can be created using these 3D laser scans. Scale models can then be created by CNC milling (foam, hard wax, etc.), or Rapid Prototyping methods such as Stereolithography. This process is able to provide historians, researchers, and professionals access to exact reproductions of rare and delicate specimens or models for display and study. |
